Welcome

The 76^th edition of the Chemistry Colloquium run annually under the aegis of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland will be hosted this year at Maynooth University on the 16th-17th June 2025 by the Department of Chemistry.
Speakers will include:

Dr Michelle Browne, Helmholtz-Zentrum, Berlin
Professor Steven Bell, Queen’s University, Belfast

Format for the Colloquium. We will follow the format implemented at the 2024 edition after the very positive feedback received by the participants.
All final year PhD students are welcome to present their research. Thus, there will be no upper limit on the number of speakers from any Institution. To achieve this, there will be multiple parallel sessions. For other postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, there will be a poster session and combined drinks/dinner reception in the evening of the 16^th June.

Event Information

Plenary Speakers

Dr Michelle Browne

We are delighted to welcome Dr Michelle Browne, currently Young Investigator Group Leader at Helmholtz-Zentrum, Berlin as an early career stage Plenary speaker. Michelle, a DCU graduate with a PhD in Chemistry from TCD, also held postdoctoral positions in Belfast, Prague and London before she started her current position. For her innovative research she has been awarded The "Curious Mind Award" in the category "Mobility, Energy and Sustainable Business" by Manager Magazine in 2023 and a L’Oréal-UNESCO Women In Science Rising Talent fellowship in 2021. She will talk about her research developing the next-generation electrocatalysts for water splitting, the hydrogen economy and her journey through her career in electrochemistry.

Prof. Steven Bell

We are delighted to have Prof. Steven Bell, Professor of Physical Chemistry at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Queen’s University Belfast, as a plenary speaker. Professor Bell’s research interests centre on the development of Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for chemical analysis, but this has branched into areas as diverse as superhydrophobic materials and liquid-liquid interfaces.
Professor Bell’s work on fundamental science has led to real-world applications. He pioneered Raman analysis of drugs of abuse, foodstuffs, and forensic evidence. He has a strong interest in the commercialisation of research and has been a Royal Society Industry Fellow and founder/director of Avalon Instruments Ltd, which manufactured user-friendly Raman instruments. Prof Bell was awarded the RSC’s prestigious Theophilius Redwood Prize in 2024 for outstanding contributions to the chemical sciences in the area of analytical chemistry.
